El Chalten vs Torres del Paine

El Chaltén and Torres del Paine are iconic trekking destinations in Patagonia, Argentina and Chile, respectively. Both of them offers incredible natural beauty, but the experiences differ slightly depending on what you’re looking for in a trek.

El Chalten, Argentina

El Chalten, often called “The trekking capital of Argentina” is located inside los Glaciares National Park and it is easily accessible from El Calafate, which is about 3 hours by car, around 280 KM.
His scenery is dominated by Mount Fitz Roy and Mount Torre and beautiful glacial lakes. Unlike El Chalten, Torres del Paine offers both shorter treks and longer, multiday treks such as the W Trek (4 -5 Days) and the O Circuit (8-10 Days).

  • The treks are more challenging, particularly the multi-day routes like the W and O circuits.
  • The W Trek involves significant elevation gains and long days on the trail, and weather conditions can be harsh.
  • The terrain can be tough with wind, snow, and rain a regular occurrence
